How much energy is going to waste through your chimneys?

Commercial laundries spend a lot of money on heating wash water and drying textiles. You probably remember last year’s final bill all too well. Why let that heat go to waste when it can be reused!

Obviously your laundry pays attention to:

  • Investing in energy efficient equipment

  • Optimising load sizes to maximise efficiency

  • Making clever use of off-peak energy pricing where possible

  • Ensuring equipment is kept clean and well-maintained for optimum operation

  • Point-of-use and on-demand (water) heating to reduce times lags and wastage

But even if your people do all of the above, there’s still heat going down the drain and up the chimney. Can you do anything about this? The answer is a resounding ‘Yes’!

Energy/heat recovery is now so much easier for commercial laundries to do than a number of years ago. Higher energy prices have driven innovation, benefitting big users like commercial and industrial laundries.

And the savings are seriously worth it:

  • Reuse of energy in process water can lead to as much as 50% energy savings by reducing the need to heat fresh water from a cold 15°C/60°F

  • Recovery of energy from waste process water at end of pipe means ‘free’ energy for heating fresh/process water

  • Recovery of energy from ironer vent also gives an energy source for heating water, for example

Recovered energy which can then be re-used in the laundry process means all kinds of savings – obviously energy and money savings, but also a reduction in your CO2 footprint and less pollution of the environment around the laundry, both exhaust fumes and high temperature waste water. This environmental upside costs no extra, it comes for free along with the economic savings. Win-win.

An added bonus is the heightened awareness this recycling brings for laundry employees, often leading to new ideas/futher recycling initiatives in the laundry which bring a new round of benefits. Furthermore, employees see that the laundry cares not only about costs, but also about the environment around them.
