Reducing Operational costs

How to reduce laundry operational costs while reaping other benefits too?

Read how specialist Tasmanian laundry Blueline in Australia did exactly that.

Blueline's Story

Founded in 1893 as BayView Laundry, Blueline Laundry has a rich history of serving the Tasmanian community. Initially providing employment to disadvantaged women and girls, it has evolved into a competitive commercial laundry while continuing its mission to offer employment, training, and personal development opportunities to those, under employed, in the community. With two sites and a workforce of 220 employees, including 35% with disabilities, Blueline exemplifies a joyful workplace.

The Challenge of High-Water Costs

In 2017, Blueline faced rising water prices and concerns about energy costs. They sought to enhance water and energy efficiency while maintaining high-quality services for their hospitality, healthcare, and workwear clients. Blueline utilized Senking tunnel washers and washer extractors in their Hobart and Launceston facilities, consuming a significant amount of water.

The Solution

In collaboration with local supply partners, Blueline conducted a comprehensive review of their water and energy usage. They decided to incorporate additional equipment to filter, store, and reuse wash water from the tunnel washers and washer extractors. Upgrading their washing equipment with Wientjens Blue Ocean Filters allowed them to recycle wash water and energy at a capacity of up to 15m3/hour. They also installed an Aquadrain system to collect dirt discharged from the filter, further enhancing wastewater treatment. Blueline then optimized their wash equipment settings to meet their 2017 objectives.

Results

By implementing the Blue Ocean Filters and adopting low-temperature wash formulas, Blueline achieved significant results:

  • One Blue Ocean Filter effectively managed wash water streams from the tunnel washers and washer extractors in both locations, with ample capacity in the filtrate holding tank.

  • Starting in 2017, all Blueline's process water was recycled, amounting to 22 million litres recycled in 2022 alone.

  • The transition to low-temperature washing reduced energy consumption for water heating.

  • As a result of these measures, Blueline halved its water consumption and permanently reduced energy costs by 10%.

We recently caught up with Blueline to assess the long-term success of the 2017 solutions. Both Blue Ocean Filters are performing well, supported by local company JayChem to maintain their optimal functionality. Ongoing washer optimization efforts have led to an additional 10% energy savings, showcasing the effectiveness of Blueline's proactive maintenance program and data-driven analysis.

Blueline Laundry's commitment to community and sustainability values and operational excellence is truly inspiring. At Wientjens, we take pride in being part of their remarkable journey.
